It hasn’t been a great offseason for the Patriots’ passing game.
New England quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski have both skipped voluntary workouts, wide receiver Julian Edelman is facing a four-game suspension, and there are also indications that wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell hasn’t recovered as quickly as hoped from last year’s knee injury.
The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a trade with the Cleveland Browns that will send cornerback Jamar Taylor to the desert, according to multiple reports. According to NFL Network, the Browns will receive a sixth-round pick in 2020. In order to facilitate the deal, Taylor has reportedly restructured his contract. He was scheduled to make $4.5 million in 2018. The Cardinals have long struggled to find a cornerback to line up opposite three-time All-Pro Patrick Peterson.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that reserve safety Rontez Miles had surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Miles is expected to miss 3-4 months as a result of the operation, which makes him a likely candidate to open the regular season on the physically unable to perform list or injured reserve with the chance to return after the first eight weeks.
Miles has been with the Jets the last five seasons and has played in 29 games over the last two seasons. He had 24 tackles last year while playing 124 snaps on defense and 326 on special teams.
Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, who were acquired with the team’s first two picks in the 2017 draft, are set to start at safety. Wilcox will join Terrence Brooks as depth players behind them while Miles is recuperating.
Right now, based on Ryan, that would $24 million per year, with $80 million guaranteed. If Rodgers gets done at $32 million per and, say, $110 million guaranteed? Then, 80 percent is $25.6 million annually and $88 million guaranteed. Yes, those numbers are staggering. But that’s a result, again, of the fact that the numbers for defensive players haven’t moved like they have for, say, receivers (Sammy Watkins just got $16 million per) or guards (Andrew Norwell is making $13.25 million).
