More than eight years ago, I first wrote that I thought it was possible/plausible that Alex Ovechkin could one day pass Wayne Gretzky’s 894 career goals total, which was previously thought to be unreachable. Ovechkin was 24 at the time.
Bosh eyeing return to NBA next seasonChris Bosh says he is not done playing professionally and is open to joining contenders, including Golden State and Toronto.
He couldn’t bear to watch. For nearly two years, when Chris Bosh glanced at a snippet of his old life — an NBA highlight of a winning 3, a gala with his ex-teammates gliding down the red carpet, resplendent in their invincibility — he’d quickly turn away, wincing from the torment of an old wound ripped open again.
Too difficult, he says. Too painful.
Bosh was in the midst of constructing a Hall of Fame career when, in February 2015, team doctors discovered a blood clot in his lung. It ended his season — and, had it gone undetected much longer, could well have ended his life.
By the numbers alone, I think Willson Contreras has a chance to shine, and a .280-20-75 season is well within the cards, er, Cubs. That said, I can’t completely ignore the fact that baseball players are people too, and there’s plenty of distractions that could play some havoc Contreras’ 2018 at some point in the form of league discipline. I hope that’s not the case, but it’s not something I can completely ignore either. — AJ Mass
But will he be worth nearly twice as much as the consistent Posey? The power is elite and that’s nice, but hitting homers isn’t as valuable as it once was. Posey’s reliability in terms of batting average and games played make him the better value in my eyes, so even if I break the mold and decide to spend up on a catcher, I’d rather go Posey’s floor. Again, Sanchez is a good fantasy option … I just don’t like the premium price point. — Kyle Soppe
